Abstract
I explain in this chapter that the high Christology set out in Chapters 11 to 13, however grand its scope, is rooted in the particular form of devotion that I know, and that it therefore makes sense to begin with the gospels as they are read in my own ecclesial context, in the context of worship. I provide a lengthy sketch of Jesus’ identity in order to display the kinds of material that the gospels yield when read in this way, and what emerges is a picture of Jesus as the one who proclaims, inaugurates, and embodies the kingdom.
