Abstract
Humans have no general egalitarian moral norm. Ancient humans varyingly adopted eight practices, each of which tended to cut a few kinds of inequality. But individuals did not do these mainly to cut inequality, and the recent fading of such practices suggests that they are no longer as adaptive as they once were.
