Abstract
Communication is fundamental in palliative care, yet the language used by health care providers may unintentionally perpetuate stigma, bias, or misunderstanding during emotionally challenging conversations. Inclusive language, defined as communication that is respectful, person-centered, and culturally responsive, fosters trust, supports shared decision-making, and promotes equitable care for patients and families facing serious illness. This article examines the role of inclusive language in palliative care through the lens of Carper’s pattern of personal knowing and explores common communication challenges encountered in clinical practice. Using 3 fictional case studies, we illustrate how commonly used phrases may inadvertently undermine patient dignity, reinforce stigma, or create confusion about goals of care. Practical recommendations are provided to help nurses and other clinicians replace noninclusive language with communication that affirms patient values, supports meaningful dialogue, and strengthens therapeutic relationships. Strategies are presented at the individual, interdisciplinary, and systems levels to facilitate the integration of inclusive language into everyday palliative care practice. By emphasizing practical communication strategies grounded in evidence and person-centered care, this article positions inclusive language as an essential component of compassionate and equitable palliative nursing practice.
