Abstract
INTRODUCTION In reading the interview by Mike Voight with coach Pete Carroll of USC, my first reaction was: Pete Carroll sure does make the game seem pretty simple. It is just a matter of knowing oneself, being true to oneself, and believing in oneself, the coaches, and the team concept. How much simpler can it be? When I received this manuscript, I immediately thought of a television sports talk show, which was aired several months ago, focusing on an interview with Coach Carroll. I was struck by the poise, openness, thoughtfulness, and candidness of Coach Carroll. He said all of the things I would want to hear from a coach, if I was wearing my sport psychologist hat. More important, he talked the language I would want to hear as a parent if I had a child talented enough to play collegiate athletics.
