Abstract
Artificial Intelligence and algorithmically mediated environments have demanded a dialectical reexamination of Jean Baudrillard's notion of the hyperreal. His notion of hyperreality tells us how the world has detached itself from the ground reality generated by representations of a reality devoid of origin and has provided an ontological framework for understanding digital culture. Here, the human subject is reduced to a "dividual," a fragmented data profile which is subjected to algorithmic modulation. However, with the evolution of AI systems from a passive tool of simulation into an active, autonomous engine of reality-construction, the hyperreal model reaches its limitation. Jean Baudrillard's notion of simulacra fails to account for the phenomenological reality of the subject and the irreducibility of the communicative lifeworld. The subjective experience of individuals, where the AI has real effects on the subject, is completely ignored. This article introduces "The Theory of Dia-referentiality" as a dialectical evolution beyond hyperreality. Dia-referentiality posits that human subjects and algorithmic systems continuously co-construct a synthetic referent. By shifting from the classical thesis of referentiality through the antithesis of hyperreality into the synthesis of Dia-referentiality, this paper reconciles Baudrillardian fatalism with Jürgen Habermas's notion of communicative action. Dia-referentiality derives from the Greek prefix dia- ("through," "between," "mutual") combined with referentiality the capacity of a sign to point back to a shared reality. It designates the process by which a referent is continuously re-secured through intersubjective exchange, rather than possessed as an inherent property of an isolated sign. It can be explained as a condition where the referentiality is compared to the intersubjective space in which it exists, and then the realness is analyzed based on its current intersubjective space.
