Abstract
The article contains an analysis of the manifestations of ageism in Polish songs. The proposed considerations use works by well-known and anonymous authors. The material database included several hundred texts of a very diverse nature. The exemplification consists of fragments of statements written mainly in the 20th century. From a rich collection of popular genres, works were cited that best illustrate the discussed issue and most accurately confirm the verbalized idea. The basic method of selective description allowed us to notice the phenomenon of relatively little interest in the song in the problems of older people. The stereotypical image of advanced-age people in songs is not a monolith. Both in its folk and stage versions, it formulates depreciating assessments (often full of pity, condemnation and exclusion), especially in relation to women. The song treats men clearly more graciously, showing greater kindness and even sympathy towards men. Slowly, however, the song verifies its traditional approach, presenting elderly people with increasing understanding and regardless of gender.
