Abstract
[The holistic health and well-being of older adults represent a priority within the International Decade of Healthy Aging (2021–2030). Forest bathing includes nature-based activities involving the five senses. Research has shown that forest bathing contributes to physical and mental health and well-being. This study evaluates the benefits of forest bathing on the physical, mental, and social health of older adults in the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area (GMA), Mexico, by examining stress reduction and the generation of positive emotional states. A pre/post-test observational study was carried out by implementing a forest therapy intervention program consisting of six weekly two-hour sessions for eleven older adults in an urban park within the GMA. The forest bathing activities adhered to the Forest Therapy Hub (FTHub) method. The findings indicate that forest bathing contributed to enhanced states of calmness (peace, relaxation, and harmony), joy (happiness), and pleasure (enjoyment of fresh air), alongside improvements in physical conditions (physical activity-walking), strengthening of interpersonal bonds and relationships (integration-socialization), and the acquisition of new skills and learning (life reflection). At the completion of the program, participants ranked the perceived contributions by priority as follows: happiness, stress reduction, new friendships and social connections, healthy living practices, and an increase in the appreciation for nature. Forest bathing, through different mechanisms, contributes to the mental, physical, and social health of older adults and creates opportunities to appreciate nature by associating it with their own health and well-being].
