Abstract
Abstract
This retrospective study examines Spanish NIE assignment rates and application-to-certificate intervals using 159 certificate documents (165 pages) issued between 22 April and 9 September 2026. It analyzes 161 registration-counter observations across 35 dates and a waiting-time cohort of 141 applications submitted through one legal-representative route at a Madrid police office. Descriptive statistics, Spearman correlation and quantile regression were used.
The report estimates 4,610 assignments per working day for 1 January to 22 April and an average of 2,440 for July to late August. Its projected 2026 total is 870,000 to 1,040,000, with a central estimate of 940,000. Median time to assignment in the cohort was 10 calendar days (95% CI 9 to 13; IQR 7 to 18). Waiting time was inversely associated with the estimated assignment rate (rho = -0.34; p < 0.0001). Projections for 2027 are intended for later validation.
National totals depend on interpretation of the registration counter and are not official government statistics. The waiting-time cohort is not nationally representative, includes applicant preparation time and excludes applications unfinished at the cutoff. Forecasts are not observed outcomes.
