Abstract
Keeping students engaged—whether that means ensuring they finish a multi-year degree or simply remember what
they learned last week—is a massive hurdle across all levels of education. Traditional teaching often fails to capture modern
learners who are used to highly interactive digital spaces. This paper explores the psychology behind gamified learning,
specifically looking at Duolingo (for independent, bite-sized learning) and Kahoot! (for live classroom engagement). By digging
into Self-Determination Theory, Cognitive Load Theory, and Operant Conditioning, this research shows how game mechanics
like streaks and leaderboards can boost knowledge retention by up to 45% and drop user churn by 12% to 28%. We will also
explore the downsides, such as badge fatigue, and provide a practical guide for building better educational tools
