Abstract
This article addresses the increase in violence against elderly people during the COVID-19 pandemic. Its general objective is to discuss the factors that may have contributed to this increase, aiming to add knowledge to the debate on the subject. The study proposes to analyze the factors associated with the rise in violence against the elderly during the pandemic; to collect quantitative data on services provided by the Manaus Specialized Police Station for Crimes Against the Elderly (DCCI-AM) during the years 2019, 2020, and 2021; and to discuss the coping actions developed by this police station in response to the surge in complaints during the health crisis. A decrease in the number of recorded incidents was observed, but, on the other hand, there was a significant increase in the number of complaints received. Based on the literature and the pandemic context, it is inferred that factors such as economic hardship and social isolation may have contributed to the rise in violence against the elderly.
