Abstract
Neil Gaiman’s “The Graveyard Book” (2008) positions a graveyard not as a place of endings but as a site of education, where the dead raise the living and the monstrous becomes pedagogical. This article examines how Gaiman reconfigures relationships between power, otherness, and culture within the framework of popular children’s literature. Drawing on Michel Foucault’s notion of heterotopia, Edward Said’s work on otherness, and Homi Bhabha’s concept of the third space, I argue that the graveyard functions as a cultural contact zone in which authority is distributed to figures traditionally marginalized by both human society and literary convention. Ghosts, ghouls, werewolves, and ancient guardians do not exist in the novel to be conquered. Instead, they teach Bod Owens how to navigate boundaries, how to read the world, and how to claim an identity that is not rooted in blood but in care. In doing so, “The Graveyard Book” intervenes in contemporary conversations about belonging and difference by suggesting that culture is learned through encounter rather than inheritance. The novel ultimately demonstrates that popular fantasy can engage complex theoretical questions while remaining accessible, and that award-winning children’s literature can model ethical alternatives to exclusionary definitions of community.
