Abstract
The rapid development of digital technologies has significantly changed the way architecture is conceived, represented, and produced. Parametric design, computational tools, digital fabrication, and artificial intelligence have expanded architectural possibilities, yet their growing influence also raises concerns about context, place, and architectural identity. This study aims to critically examine the relationship between technological innovation and the contextual qualities of contemporary digital architecture, with particular attention to the tension between digital freedom and the need for meaningful connections to place and culture. A qualitative critical research approach was employed through a review and interpretive analysis of international literature on digital architecture, architectural identity, contextual design, computational design, and emerging AI-based architectural practices. The analysis focused on recurring debates concerning technological determinism, aesthetic homogenization, contextual detachment, and the changing role of the architect in digitally mediated design processes. The findings indicate that digital technology itself does not necessarily diminish architectural identity; rather, problems emerge when technological capabilities become the primary driver of design decisions. The study argues that a more critical approach to digital architecture is needed, in which computational innovation is balanced with cultural context, environmental conditions, human experience, and the character of place. Digital architecture can therefore become more meaningful when technology remains a means of architectural expression rather than its ultimate objective.
