Abstract
This study was motivated by the low level of student engagement in Science lessons among Grade VIII.I students at SMPN 33 Makassar, evidenced by their passivity during discussions and question-and-answer sessions. The study aimed to enhance this engagement through the implementation of the Discovery Learning model. A Classroom Action Research (CAR) approach based on the Kemmis and McTaggart model was employed, conducted over three cycles. The research subjects comprised 27 students (15 girls and 12 boys). Data were collected using a questionnaire based on six indicators of engagement and subsequently analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results demonstrated a progressive increase in the average percentage of student engagement across the cycles. In Cycle I, engagement reached 69% (moderate category), rising to 73% in Cycle II. The most significant increase occurred in Cycle III, reaching 88% (high category), characterized by students' enthusiasm in asking questions, participating in discussions, and solving problems. The implementation of the Discovery Learning model proved effective in consistently enhancing Science learning engagement among Grade VIII students at SMPN 33 Makassar.
