Abstract
Plywood is a widely used in furniture and construction materials. Its environmental friendliness and adhesive strength performance are directly determined by the adhesive used in its preparation. In order to prepare a type of environmentally friendly and high-performance adhesive for plywood, this research developed a chitosan based wood adhesive via sodium periodate oxidation at room temperature. The oxidized chitosan (OCS) was proved to be able to undergo self-crosslinking through the Schiff base reaction, forming a three-dimensional network structure, thus enabling it to be used as a wood adhesive system, with excellent water resistance and bonding strength, without the need for external crosslinking agents. The prepared plywood achieved a bonding strength of 1.47 MPa in boiling water (93 °C), featuring a simple preparation process, environmental friendliness, and excellent bonding performance. The bonded wood panels show broad application potential and promising prospects in the furniture and construction materials industry.
