Abstract
A series of consolidated undrained tests is performed to establish a direct relationship between flow liquefaction resistance and compressive or shear wave velocities in a saturated, fine-grained mine tailing. Piezoceramic transducers for generating and receiving elastic waves have been installed in the end caps of a triaxial testing apparatus enabling production of square shear and compressive waves. Both the compressive and shear wave velocities are found to be reliable indicators of liquefaction resistance. However, the relationship between shear wave velocity and void ratio appears to fit the consolidation state as well as steady state, showing a more sensitive indicator of liquefaction compared to compressive wave velocities.
