Abstract
The ar cle examines the names of trees and shrubs and the -ina forma ons derived from
them. In historical Polish, the analysed words could denote ‘a growing tree,’ ‘a cluster of such
trees or a forest,’ ‘wood or cut branches of the tree,’ or ‘the fruit or another part of the plant.’
Contemporary Polish dic onaries defi ne these nouns in various ways, o en inconsistently, with
discrepancies occurring even within individual dic onaries. The ar cle off ers a descrip on of the
lexical material based on the concept of deriva onal nests, which makes it possible to delineate
precisely the func oning of both base words and the -ina forma ons in specifi c meanings in the
16th-century and contemporary Polish.
