Abstract
THE « ROMAN POPULISTE » : THE STAKES OF A LITERARY LABEL In the French novel of the 1930' s, democratic representation was a preoccupation for proletarian, communist and populist authors, with the latter founding a literary « school ». The commotion created by the award of the first Prix Populiste to E. Dabit in 1931, demonstrates that the primary function of the label « populist » was the domination of a literary field, rather than a genuine reflection on the question of the people in literature.
