Abstract
Aspects of identity – specifically the binaries of female/male, homosexual/heterosexual and not like me/like me – are the focus for an exploration of how the tension between the two opposite sides of the polarities could be understood, shedding a light on some significant movements in society. Misogyny seems increasingly present. Many people are uncomfortable with their gender identity. Some are choosing to transition or prefer to identify as non-binary. Diversity of populations – the result of movement of peoples whose lives have become unsustainable in their countries of origin – is a source of tension in the UK and other preferred destinations. The theme of identity has been revisited throughout the book. This chapter focusses on what it might mean to transcend these binaries, explored through the lens of ancient wisdom and from a transpersonal perspective. Therapists are currently working with individuals around these issues in the context of a society that is still in the process of assimilating them. The discussion here is offered as a basis for reflection and self-awareness, supporting competent and effective work with clients and contributing to self-care for practitioners and a culture of care, within the profession and in wider society.
