Abstract
An analysis of neglected volumes of the Diela spisovateľov slovenských (Works of Slovak Writers) series fleshes out Vlček’s editorial profile. The ambition to critically verify and record the history of the text, alongside the effort to exhaustively map the sources, came to form the basis for a systematic collation of sources and the subsequent restitution of the text; however, this also led Vlček to editorially sanction neglected sources. He often contaminated the identity of the source text to such an extent that he arbitrarily alternated between sources when establishing the editorial text. The radical and multifaceted interventions in the text do not allow for a unified interpretation or description. Reflection on them has raised questions regarding their motivation and consequences (e.g. with regard to his efforts to stylistically and aesthetically improve the text, his intention to comply with social conventions, the elimination of uncomfortable positions and attacks on Western culture and on himself, etc.).
