Abstract
Objective. Measure the effect of changes in certain factors affecting chicken meat production in Mexico and the impact of import prices on wholesale prices. Materials and methods. Using annual data from 1980 to 2024, a simultaneous equations model was estimated using two-stage least squares (2SLS) analysis. The results allowed for the calculation of short- and long-term economic elasticities. Results. In the short and long term, chicken meat production in Mexico responds inelastically to a 1 % increase in the producer price, with increases of 0.0187 % and 0.0651 %, respectively. The factor that most effects production is technology (0.6965 %), followed by labor costs (-0.0288 %). The effect of import prices on the wholesale price of chicken meat in Mexico is 0.31 % for each one percentage point change in the import price. Conclusion. The impact of pork price is greater than the effect that turkey price has on chicken production.
