Abstract
Wheat is a crucial staple crop globally and locally; however, its cultivation is increasingly threatened by soil degradation, which adversely impacts yields and food security. Soil degradation, characterized by nutrient depletion, erosion, and salinization, undermines agricultural productivity and the health of ecosystems. This study addresses the pressing issue of soil degradation in wheat cultivation and explores the imperative of Integrated Soil Fertility Management (ISFM) as a sustainable solution. ISFM combines organic and inorganic soil amendments, crop rotation, and conservation practices to restore and maintain the soil health.
This study reviews the historical and current trends in soil degradation, highlighting its detrimental effects on wheat yield and soil quality. It further examines the principles and practices of ISFM, including the use of cover crops, green manures, balanced fertilization and agroforestry. Evidence from case studies has demonstrated the efficacy of ISFM in improving soil structure, increasing water retention, and enhancing wheat productivity.
ISFM not only boosts yield and quality but also promotes environmental sustainability by reducing the reliance on chemical inputs and lowering greenhouse gas emissions. However, the successful implementation of ISFM faces challenges, such as limited farmer awareness and insufficient policy support. This study recommends strengthening policy frameworks, enhancing farmer education, and investing in research and development to overcome these barriers and promote the widespread adoption of ISFM practices.
These findings underscore the necessity of ISFM in addressing soil degradation and ensuring sustainable wheat production. By integrating ISFM practices, stakeholders can achieve long-term benefits in terms of soil health, crop resilience, and environmental sustainability. This study concludes with a call to action for stakeholders to embrace ISFM and a hopeful outlook on the future of sustainable wheat cultivation.
