Abstract
Objective To explore the mediating effect of fear of disease progression between social support and acceptance of illness in patients with colorectal cancer. Methods Using the convenience sampling method, a total of 213 colorectal cancer patients who met the inclusion criteria were recruited from the Anorectal Surgery and Colorectal Surgery Departments of the Sixth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University from August 2025 to December 2025. The General Information Questionnaire, Acceptance of Illness Scale (AIS), Social Support Rating Scale (SSRS), and Fear of Progression Questionnaire-Short Form (FOP-Q-SF) were adopted to conduct the questionnaire survey. Results The score of AIS in colorectal cancer patients was (22. 12±7. 17), the score of FOP-Q-SF was (35. 04±10. 06), and the score of SSRS was (41. 56±8. 46). Illness acceptance was negatively correlated with fear of disease progression (r=-0. 379, P<0. 01) and positively correlated with social support (r=0. 282, P<0. 01). Fear of disease progression played a partial mediating role between social support and illness acceptance in colorectal cancer patients, with the mediating effect accounting for 20. 97% of the total effect. Conclusion Fear of disease progression plays a partial mediating role between social support and acceptance of illness in patients with colorectal cancer. Clinical medical staff should attach importance to the construction of patients’ social support systems, and conduct targeted psychological interventions on fear of disease progression, so as to enhance patient’s disease acceptance, help them cope with the disease better, re-adapt to society, and improve their quality of life.
