Abstract
Family communication plays an important role in shaping adolescents’ interpersonal communication because the family is the first environment in which adolescents learn to interact, express thoughts and feelings, and respond to others. However, family communication does not always occur openly and harmoniously. This study aims to analyze the family’s role in shaping adolescents’ interpersonal communication and its relevance from the perspective of Islamic Family Law. This study employs a qualitative approach using library research. Relevant scholarly literature was identified and analyzed descriptively and analytically. The results show that families shape adolescents’ interpersonal communication through interaction patterns, parental role modeling, openness, and opportunities for dialogue. From an Islamic perspective, communication should be based on politeness, gentleness, honesty, affection, respect, patience, and wisdom. Open and dialogical communication contributes to family resilience and harmony. From the perspective of Islamic Family Law, communication supports parental responsibility for caring for and educating children as stipulated in Article 77 paragraph (3) of the Compilation of Islamic Law. It is also relevant to the principles of Maqāṣid al-Syarī‘ah, particularly ḥifẓ al-nafs and ḥifẓ al-‘aql, in protecting and promoting children’s welfare. It is therefore part of the effort to establish a sakinah, mawaddah, and rahmah family.
