Abstract
Background: Evolvulus sericeus belongs to the family Convolvulaceae and is commonly known as silky dwarf morning glory. It is a perennial herb widely distributed in tropical and subtropical regions. The plant has been traditionally used in folk and ethnomedicinal systems for the treatment of neurological, inflammatory, and metabolic disorders. However, detailed scientific studies related to its pharmacological activities are still limited.
Objective: The present review aims to summarize the phytochemical constituents and pharmacological activities of Evolvulus sericeus based on the available literature.
Methods: The information included in this review was collected from published scientific literature using databases such as Google Scholar and ResearchGate. Relevant studies related to phytochemical screening, traditional uses, and pharmacological activities of Evolvulus sericeus were analyzed and compiled.
Results: Preliminary phytochemical screening of the ethanolic extract of Evolvulus sericeus indicated the presence of several secondary metabolites including flavonoids, alkaloids, glycosides, phenolic compounds, and tannins, while saponins were absent. These phytoconstituents are known for their antioxidant and protective biological activities. Pharmacological studies suggested that Evolvulus sericeus possesses antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, nephroprotective, and neuroprotective properties. The reported mechanisms mainly involve free radical scavenging and modulation of antioxidant enzymes. The presence of phenolic and flavonoid compounds supports the medicinal importance of the plant due to their role in reducing oxidative stress and inflammatory responses.
Conclusion: Evolvulus sericeus shows promising pharmacological potential because of its rich phytochemical composition and diverse biological activities. Nevertheless, further detailed investigations using advanced analytical techniques such as HPLC, LC-MS, and in vivo experimental models are required to identify the active constituents and confirm its therapeutic value for future drug development.
