Abstract
Knowledge and practice of nutrition and climate change education among adolescents in karu
LGA Nasarawa state, Nigeria towards the consumption of fruits and vegetables was studied by
administering a well-structured questionnaire. A cross-sectional survey of 442 adolescents aged
10-19 were selected through multistage random sampling. Results showed that mean respondents
with good nutritional knowledge of fruits and vegetables consumption after intervention was
66.42% while mean respondents with poor knowledge prior to the intervention was 23.85%. In
terms of nutritional practice, outcome showed mean score of 6.22% representing respondents with
poor nutritional practice towards fruits and vegetables consumption but increased with a mean
score of 28.75% after the intervention. Similarly, Climate change literacy towards the
consumption of fruits and vegetables was low in in-school adolescents before intervention with a
mean value of 19.2 % and higher with mean 96.37% after intervention. There were significant
(p<0.05) differences in scores between the post-intervention and control group (pre-intervention).
Appropriate intervention was found to be effective in improving knowledge and practice of
nutrition and climate change education towards the consumption of fruits and vegetables among
in-school adolescents studied. Adopting nutrition education interventions as well as credible
information about climate change will promote healthy eating habit amongst in-school
adolescents. This study suggests the need to promote appropriate education nutrition as well as in
climate change literacy among adolescents through formal and informal education.
