Abstract
Introduction: Multiple factors can protect adolescents from engaging in substance use behaviors such as tobacco consumption. These factors include personal, psychological, social, and contextual determinants. Objective: To develop a Situation-Specific Theory on factors that protect secondary school students from tobacco use. Methods: Dulock’s stages were applied for substructuring, including the identification of key variables, analysis of levels of abstraction, and identification of the different links and relationships among the study variables. Results: A Situation-Specific Theory on factors that protect secondary school students from tobacco use was developed, using Pender’s Health Promotion Model (HPM) as the theoretical–empirical conceptual framework. Conclusions: This Situation-Specific Theory may be highly useful for explaining substance use phenomena and for implementing health promotion strategies in adolescents, as well as for the development of preventive programs and health interventions.
