Abstract
The use of adjective vocabulary is an important aspect of descriptive text writing because it helps clarify the characteristics, conditions, colors, shapes, sizes, and impressions of the objects being described. This study aims to describe the use of adjective vocabulary in descriptive texts written by Grade VII students at SMP Negeri 1 Sijunjung and to analyze its relationship with descriptive text writing skills. The study employed a quantitative descriptive approach involving 64 students selected through proportional random sampling from a population of 125 Grade VII students. Data were collected through a descriptive text writing performance test and an adjective vocabulary mastery instrument and were subsequently analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and simple regression. The results showed that adjective vocabulary mastery was significantly related to descriptive text writing skills, with a correlation coefficient of 0.412 and a significance value of 0.001. Adjective vocabulary mastery contributed 16.9% to descriptive text writing skills. These findings indicate that adjective vocabulary mastery is associated with students’ ability to produce more concrete, detailed, and communicative descriptions. The implications of this study emphasize the importance of strengthening and enriching adjective vocabulary in Indonesian language instruction to support the development of descriptive text writing skills among junior high school students.
