Abstract
Waste is an environmental challenge that requires active community involvement. Plastic waste is difficult to decompose naturally and can cause environmental pollution if improperly managed. This Community Service (PkM) activity aimed to increase environmental awareness among youth while providing practical skills in utilizing plastic waste to produce useful products through plastic waste-based paving blocks. The activity was conducted in Delima Jaya Village, Kerinci Kanan District, Siak Regency, Riau Province, involving 15 male students (santri) from Riyadus Sholihin Islamic Boarding School. The implementation used an educational-participatory approach, demonstrations, and hands-on practice. Materials covered plastic waste problems, the 3R principles (Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle), the circular economy, the relationship between waste management and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the stages of producing paving blocks from plastic waste. Participants were directly involved in material processing and production. The results showed active participation during educational and practical activities and successful production of sample paving blocks. As no pre-tests, post-tests, or laboratory testing were conducted, the outcomes were not expressed as percentage increases in knowledge or claims regarding specific technical quality. The activity demonstrates the potential of santri as environmental change agents and supports SDG 11, SDG 12, SDG 13, and SDG 14.
