Abstract
Strawberry leaves (Fragaria × ananassa A.N. Duch) contain phenolic and flavonoid compounds that have potential as antioxidants in topical preparations. This study aimed to formulate and evaluate an emulgel of strawberry leaf extract with variations of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) as a gelling agent and propylene glycol as a cosolvent. This laboratory experimental study used five formulations with varying concentrations of HPMC (0.25-0.75%) and propylene glycol (6.5-7.5%), while the concentrations of extract (0.5%), VCO (2.5%), Tween 80 (1.5%), TEA (1%), and glycerin (2.5%) were kept constant. Physical characteristics were evaluated based on organoleptic properties, homogeneity, pH, viscosity, spreadability, adhesion, and emulsion type. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA followed by Tukey HSD test (α=0.05). The results showed that all formulations were light brown, homogeneous, and had an oil-in-water emulsion type. Increasing HPMC concentration increased viscosity (1850-4250 cPs) and adhesion (4.50-8.93 seconds), but decreased spreadability (6.87-4.89 cm). All formulations had pH values ranging from 5.80 to 6.18, which were compatible with skin pH. Formula F3 (HPMC 0.5% and propylene glycol 7%) exhibited the most optimal physical characteristics. Variations in HPMC and propylene glycol concentrations affected the physical characteristics of the strawberry leaf extract emulgel.
