Abstract
This study investigated the perceived influence of play equipment on the holistic development of pupils in private and public primary schools within Local Education District I, Lagos State, Nigeria. The study was premised on the understanding that play constitutes a vital component of early childhood education and contributes significantly to children's physical, social-emotional, cognitive, creative, and language development. A descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The population comprised teachers and administrators of selected public and private primary schools, while a sample of 120 respondents was drawn from twenty schools using simple random sampling techniques. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics, including frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations. The findings revealed that most schools possessed basic play equipment such as slides, merry-go-rounds, football facilities, and basketball courts, although several advanced play facilities were largely unavailable. Results further showed that play equipment exerted a significant positive influence on pupils’ physical development (Mean = 3.19), socio-emotional development (Mean = 3.31), cognitive and creativity development (Mean = 3.27), and language development (Mean = 3.09). The study concluded that access to adequate and appropriate play equipment enhances the holistic development of pupils and promotes meaningful learning experiences. It was therefore recommended that school proprietors, educational administrators, and government agencies provide sufficient, safe, and age-appropriate play equipment to facilitate the overall growth and development of learners.
