The Relationship between Peer Pressure and Resilience among Young Adults: Locus of Control as a Moderating Factor

This research examined the relationship between peer pressure and resilience among youth and explored whether locus of control moderates this relationship. A quantitative correlational research design was used. The sample included 350 participants aged 18 to 23 years, selected through convenience sampling. Data were collected through the Peer Pressure Revised Questionnaire, the Child and Youth Resilience Measure, and Levenson’s Multidimensional Locus of Control Scales. Pearson correlation and regression analyses were used, with the level of significance set at p < .05. The findings showed a significant negative relationship between peer pressure and resilience. Higher peer pressure was linked with lower resilience among youth. Internal locus of control had a significant positive relationship with resilience, showing that young people who believed they had greater control over their lives were more able to cope with challenges. Chance locus of control also showed a small but significant relationship with resilience. However, locus of control did not significantly moderate the relationship between peer pressure and resilience. No significant gender differences were found in resilience. These findings highlight the need to strengthen resilience and personal control beliefs among youth to help them manage peer pressure more effectively.
