Abstract
This article aims to deconstruct first-wave legendary street spots. It takes a historic constructivist approach and explains the legendary spots’ context within the 1990s male-centered skateboarding culture and its gatekeeping tendencies. Further, it introduces the concept of “dying magic” as an analytical tool for describing the erosion of the legendary status operating within three mechanisms. Media Overexposure, Creative Exhaustion and Physical Destruction. Finally, it suggests a new wave of legendary spots. It highlights the new media effect on skate culture, its decentralization, and how these changes could potentially affect the form of these newly emerging legendary spots.
