Abstract
This paper presents a comprehensive overview smart-grid deployment in Nigeria to improve energy efficiency, reliability, and management. It synthesizes recent policy initiatives, pilot projects, and sector metrics; describes essential smart-grid components and architectures; analyses Nigeria-specific technical, economic, and institutional barriers; and proposes a staged implementation roadmap (national → regional → distribution/metro → rural microgrids) that leverages distributed renewable energy, advanced metering, and market reforms. Key recommendations cover regulatory reform, targeted investments in distribution automation, data/telecom infrastructure, workforce capacity building, and financing models to accelerate adoption. Evidence from NERC and recent donor/private projects shows distributed renewables and mini/microgrid programs are already central to expanding access smart grids can multiply their benefits when integrated with grid modernization efforts.
