Abstract
This paper examines the transformation of shopping centers, accelerated by the impacts of the global pandemic and the rapid expansion of e-commerce. It argues that strategic architectural interventions can revitalize interior spaces, extending a building’s life cycle and enhancing its competitiveness. The focus shifts from traditional retail toward the creation of “lifestyle destinations” – social hubs offering a sensory-rich and comfortable environment for communication, work, and entertainment. The study analyzes contemporary architectural techniques used to achieve these objectives. Through the lens of three specific renovation projects of shopping malls in Bulgaria, the paper illustrates the practical application of these methods. Finally, it summarizes the achieved results across architectural, social, and economic dimensions, highlighting the synergy between design quality and commercial resilience.
