The Future of Responsible Scientist Ranking: Beyond Citations
Which additional evidence could improve rankings, and why new indicators should not be invented before they are auditable.
More dimensions are desirable
Research influence includes reproducible software, reusable datasets, rigorous peer review, mentoring and contributions to public policy or practice. Many of these are important but are difficult to measure consistently across disciplines and countries.
Better measurement needs reliable sources
Contribution taxonomies, robust field-and-year citation baselines and validated self-citation analysis may help interpretation. They should be used only when the underlying identifiers and links are complete enough for fair comparison.
Change requires versioning
Adding a new metric can reorder rankings. A transparent programme should test sensitivity, document coverage, publish the amended formula and preserve historical editions so earlier claims remain checkable.
The enduring principle
A ranking should assist informed judgment, not substitute for it. Trust grows from accurate identity matching, clear methodology, provenance, correction rights and honest limits on what a score can say.
