What Counts as Open-Science Leadership?
A look at transparency, reusable methods and scholarly service beyond journal citation totals.
Leadership is more than title
Supervision, collaboration, infrastructure building and reproducible research practices can improve science. Some contributions are visible in public records, while others—such as mentoring or local capacity building—are difficult to quantify consistently.
Open materials help verification
Shared protocols, code, documentation and appropriately accessible datasets allow others to evaluate methods or build on findings. Access must still respect participant privacy, contracts and research ethics.
Avoid invented indicators
A ranking should not assign precise scores for peer-review effort, software reuse or leadership without consistent reliable evidence. Gaps should be stated rather than replaced with assumptions about an author's prominence.
Context in RSIS
The RSIS framework names Research Leadership & Open Science as one weighted pillar. Readers should review the actual version's operational criteria and documented limitations before interpreting that pillar as a complete account of academic citizenship.
