Why Scientist Ranking Editions Must Be Versioned
How release dates, methodology codes and historical snapshots make public rankings auditable.
A ranking is time-bound
Source data and research activity change continuously. A position published in one edition may differ from a later edition even without any change in the researcher's work because index coverage or the comparison population has shifted.
Version the rules as well as data
A methodology code identifies the calculation logic and eligibility requirements. A snapshot date identifies the evidence at the time of computation. Both are required to understand or reproduce a historical result.
Preserve the past
Replacing older scores in place can make previously shared claims impossible to verify. Release histories, change notes and links to the appropriate edition help readers distinguish legitimate updates from errors.
How to cite a result
Include the full product name, methodology version or edition, researcher profile or certificate link, the observed value and access date. A bare number copied into a CV is easier to misinterpret than a traceable reference.
