ROR Identifiers and the Institutional Side of Scientist Rankings
Why standardising organisation identities helps avoid affiliation confusion in global scholarly data.
The naming problem
An institution can be known by abbreviations, translated names or historic titles. Two organisations can also have very similar names. Searching by plain text may inadvertently connect a researcher with the wrong university or research hospital.
What ROR identifies
The Research Organization Registry assigns persistent identifiers to research organisations. It supports matching affiliations across scholarly services. A ROR identifier establishes a registry identity, not accreditation, programme recognition or automatic eligibility for every ranking.
Connections should be explicit
A work may have a publisher-supplied institutional address, while a researcher may have a separate verified affiliation. Platforms should keep source provenance so a reader can distinguish a historical publication link from a current organisational membership.
Practical benefit
Consistent institution identifiers improve filtering, country views and attribution checks. Researchers can help by keeping current affiliation information accurate and by reporting improper institution matches rather than accepting inflated association counts.
