Institutional Affiliations in Scientist Ranking Profiles
How to treat current, historical and disputed university affiliations without misrepresenting researchers.
Affiliations change
A scientist can move between universities, hospitals and independent research organisations. Papers usually reflect the affiliation reported at publication time, which may differ from current employment. Automatically treating every historic address as a present appointment can mislead readers.
Kinds of evidence
A claimed profile, verified organisation membership or authoritative institutional page may support a current relationship. A publication byline supports an association with that publication but may not establish an ongoing institutional role.
Ranking implications
Researcher metrics are primarily about identifiable scholarly work rather than prestige borrowed from an organisation's name. Country and institutional displays should disclose how affiliation was determined and avoid inventing missing data.
Checking your record
Inspect both current affiliation and historic publication addresses. Use ROR identifiers when appropriate, request corrections to false links and preserve the distinction between past collaboration, academic appointment and platform membership.
