Claimed vs Imported Researcher Profiles: What the Labels Mean
A guide to understanding researcher-controlled information and automatically discovered scholarly records.
Two different origins
A claimed profile usually includes information managed by the person or an authorised account. An imported researcher record may be assembled from public publication metadata. Importing a name from an article does not prove that the named individual registered for the platform.
Evidence and ownership are distinct
A claimed account may still need verification of publications, whereas an unclaimed record can be linked to legitimate scholarly outputs. The relevant questions are whether identity is supported, whether the work is accurately attributed and whether the display labels are honest.
Why this matters for rankings
If two author identities are incorrectly merged, their combined metrics may inflate a rank. If one person is split across records, the displayed activity may be incomplete. A responsible process resolves identity issues before converting metadata into public recognition.
How to correct a profile
Provide persistent identifiers, publication DOIs and links to authoritative records. Avoid relying only on similar names or institutional websites. Evidence-based correction improves the directory and protects other researchers from mistaken attribution.
