Why Scholar Metrics Differ Across Research Platforms
What to do when OpenAlex, Scopus, Google Scholar or another source reports different figures.
Indexes have different boundaries
Providers vary in journal coverage, conference material, books, references and preprints. Some include content that others omit. A researcher can therefore receive several legitimate but non-identical bibliometric counts.
Identifiers can be inconsistent
Author disambiguation and document deduplication are challenging at scale. One provider may split a career, another may merge homonyms, and a third may link additional publications. None of those differences should be hidden when interpreting metrics.
Reconciliation requires evidence
Compare exact work lists, years, source identifiers and document types. Investigate missing papers, duplicate versions and citation-link differences instead of choosing whichever headline number is largest.
Avoid cross-provider league tables
If two scientist profiles use different underlying sources or update windows, their numbers may not be directly comparable. A responsible ranking specifies one consistent evidence policy for each released comparison.
