Who Gets Institutional Credit for a Scientist's Publications?
How to avoid misattributing research to the wrong university or hospital in ranking dashboards.
Affiliations belong to a timeline
A paper's institutional byline describes an association at the time of the research or publication; it may not reflect a later employer. A profile should distinguish historical publication affiliations from current institutional membership.
Multi-institution papers are common
Collaborative studies may involve authors from several universities. A single paper can legitimately contribute to multiple institutional research portfolios under a published counting method, but the totals should not be presented as unique global papers without deduplication.
Identity precision matters
Standardised organisation identifiers, documented author affiliations and reliable dates reduce confusion. Similar university names and translated titles make text-only matching especially risky in regional datasets.
Don't infer formal status
An institution appearing in a scholarly graph does not automatically mean that its programmes are accredited or that an external ranking organisation has endorsed it. Public claims should follow the exact evidence and scope of each system.
