How Universities Can Use Scientist Rankings Responsibly
Guidance for academic communications, quality offices and institutional research dashboards.
A ranking can support discovery
Researcher leaderboards can help institutions locate expertise and review documented bibliometric trends. They should not replace assessment of teaching, mentoring, patient care, research integrity or local scholarly impact.
Check affiliation before claiming credit
A highly ranked scientist may be a former employee, external collaborator or joint appointee. Institutional publicity should verify the relationship and avoid portraying every past publication affiliation as current employment.
State the method and boundaries
Announcements should name ResearchHub, the edition, field and recognition tier, then explain that the result is based on defined scholarly evidence. This prevents readers from confusing independent rankings with statutory accreditation or other providers' awards.
Build a correction channel
University librarians and quality teams can help reconcile ORCID identifiers, publications and ROR affiliations. Good governance values accurate records over a large collection of unverified badges.
