Scientist Ranking vs University Ranking: Key Differences
Why individual researcher impact and institutional performance require different units and evidence rules.
Different objects of assessment
Scientist rankings assess people through defined scholarly records; university rankings examine organisations through specified institutional evidence. A university's strength cannot be calculated simply by adding a handful of star researchers, and a scientist's ability cannot be inferred from the prestige of an employer.
The relationship is not automatic
Authorship on a paper can show an affiliation at publication time, not necessarily a present appointment. Institutional research output needs careful attribution and a coherent methodology to avoid double counting across multiple affiliated organisations.
ResearchHub uses distinct frameworks
ResearchHub publishes the RSIS scientist methodology separately from its RHR university-ranking methods. Their criteria, populations and published editions differ. A score of 90 in one cannot be equated with a score of 90 in the other.
Choose the appropriate tool
Use researcher rankings to explore a documented individual research record, and institutional rankings to examine the criteria and evidence attached to an organisation. Neither should replace direct review of relevant scientific work.
