Presenting Research Impact Responsibly on an Academic CV
How to report publications, citations and awards without making unsupported ranking claims.
Separate accomplishments by type
Distinguish peer-reviewed original research, reviews, preprints, datasets, software, grants and service. Different contributions tell different stories and should not be collapsed into a single impressive-sounding count.
Source every numerical metric
An h-index, citation total or ranking position is meaningful only with its provider, date and definition. Do not combine counts from separate databases or present a third-party rank without naming its issuer and edition.
Explain your role
Where appropriate, identify first authorship, senior responsibility or documented contributorship rather than implying sole responsibility for all collaborative work. Use DOI links and official publication pages to make entries verifiable.
Keep recognition precise
If listing a ResearchHub certificate, include the exact tier, year or edition and verification URL. It is a ResearchHub designation, not a statutory credential or an award from an unrelated body.
